The Adrar Dunes form a wide-open desert landscape in northern Mauritania, situated atop the expansive Adrar Plateau. This vast sea of sand, often referred to as an "erg," consists of migrating dunes that are constantly reshaped by the prevailing Saharan winds. Some of these sand mountains reach remarkable heights, displaying a palette of colors ranging from pale gold to deep ochre depending on the sun's position. The region is historically significant as it lies near the ancient caravan towns of Chinguetti and Ouadane, which were once thriving centers of trans-Saharan trade and Islamic scholarship. Despite the extreme aridity and harsh environment, the plateau is home to hidden oases and deep canyons that have supported nomadic communities for centuries. Travelers to the Adrar region are treated to a quintessential Saharan experience, characterized by vast horizons, absolute silence, and some of the clearest night skies on the planet, making it a prime location for stargazing and desert exploration.
