Misuku Hills

The Misuku Hills, located in the far northern reaches of Malawi near the Tanzanian border, are a remote and ecologically significant highland region. Rising to elevations of approximately 2,100 meters, the hills are characterized by a rugged and deeply dissected topography formed from ancient crystalline basement rock. This area is home to some of Malawi's last remaining montane rainforests, such as the Matipa and Wilindi forests, which harbor a wealth of biodiversity, including rare orchids and endemic bird species. The region's cool, misty climate and fertile soils provide convenient conditions for the cultivation of high-quality Arabica coffee, which is the primary economic activity for the local Misuku people. Because of their relative isolation and difficult access, the Misuku Hills have remained largely untouched by large-scale development, preserving a pristine landscape that gives a glimpse into the unique Afro-montane ecosystems of the East African Rift system.
