The Old Church

The historic brick church features a peaceful atmosphere and a glimpse into the past.

The Livingstonia Mission was established in 1894 by Scottish missionaries of the Free Church of Scotland, led by Dr. Robert Laws. Located on the Khondowe Plateau at an elevation of 900 meters, the site was chosen specifically to escape the malaria-infested lowlands of Lake Malawi. It quickly grew into a premier educational and medical institution, influencing much of Central and East Africa with its technical and academic schools. The town’s architecture is uniquely Victorian, featuring red-brick buildings and tree-lined avenues that contrast with the surrounding African landscape. The historic "Stone House," completed in 1903 as Laws' residence, now functions as a museum detailing the mission's pioneering history. Another highlight is the mission church, which features a stained-glass window depicting David Livingstone’s encounters in Africa. Beyond its cultural heritage, the plateau provides dramatic panoramic views of Lake Malawi and the Livingstone Mountains.
