Karonga Fossil Beds (Malawi)

Weather…

The Karonga Fossil Beds in northern Malawi are a world-renowned paleontological treasure trove located within the geologically active East African Rift System. This site gained international fame for the discovery of the Malawisaurus dixeyi, a titanosaurid dinosaur that roamed the region during the Early Cretaceous period. Equally significant are the Hominid fossil finds in the Chiwondo Beds, which include a 2.4-million-year-old jawbone belonging to Homo rudolfensis, providing essential data on early human evolution. Much of the research and the spectacular finds are managed and displayed at the Karonga Cultural and Museum Centre, where visitors can view the reconstructed skeleton of the Malawisaurus. The fossil beds themselves offer a raw, untouched look at the ancient history of the continent. Traveling to Karonga provides a rare opportunity to stand on the ground where both prehistoric giants and our earliest ancestors once lived, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the rift valley's escarpments and the nearby shores of Lake Malawi.
