The Nyika Plateau is one of Africa's most fascinating landscapes, straddling the border between Zambia and Malawi. Situated at altitudes exceeding 2,000 meters, it has a cool, often misty climate that stands in stark contrast to the heat of the African savanna. The landscape, with its rolling green hills and deep valleys, is often compared to the Scottish Highlands. The plateau is famous for its incredible variety of wildflowers, including over 200 species of orchids that bloom spectacularly after the first rains. Wildlife viewing on the Nyika Plateau is a distinct experience. It is home to large populations of eland, zebra, and bushbuck. However, the region is particularly renowned for its high leopard density, which can best be spotted during night game drives. For birdwatchers, the area is a paradise, hosting many montane species found nowhere else in the region. Hiking and mountain biking are popular activities to enjoy the vast silence and fresh mountain air. Accommodation is typically found in cozy lodges, often equipped with fireplaces as nights can become quite cold. The Zambian side is wilder and less developed than the Malawian part. Access is challenging, involving steep mountain roads, which ensures a tranquil and exclusive experience. The best time for hiking is from May to September, while the wildflowers are at their most animated between December and March.
