Tukuyu is a historically significant town in the Southern Highlands of Tanzania, located in the Mbeya Region at an elevation of approximately 1,500 meters. Founded during the German colonial period as Neu Langenburg, the town is celebrated for its cool, wet climate and exceptionally lush green landscapes. It is situated on the slopes of Mount Rungwe, a dormant volcano whose fertile volcanic ash soils have made the region a center of agricultural excellence. Tukuyu is renowned for producing high-quality tea, coffee, and bananas, with sprawling tea estates defining the local topography. The town's architecture still bears traces of its colonial past, giving it a unique character among Tanzanian urban centers. Beyond farming, the area is a major hub for forestry and holds great potential for ecotourism due to its proximity to crater lakes and spectacular waterfalls. Tukuyu remains a primary cultural center for the Nyakyusa people and a vital economic junction in the southwestern part of the country.
