Livingstonia Escarpment (Malawi)

Weather…

The Livingstonia Escarpment is one of Malawi's most dramatic geographical features, marking the steep descent from the Nyika Plateau to the shores of Lake Malawi. This tectonic drop covers over 700 meters in elevation, creating a rugged landscape characterized by sheer cliffs and sweeping vistas. It is most famous for the Gorodi Road, a legendary mountain pass featuring 22 hairpin bends that zigzag up the face of the escarpment, providing travelers with unparalleled views of the lake's blue expanse. Perched on the very edge of the plateau is the historic Livingstonia Mission, established in 1894 by Scottish missionaries to escape the malarial lowlands. The area is a haven for hikers and nature enthusiasts, as the rapid change in altitude results in diverse ecosystems, from tropical lakefront flora to cool, misty highland forests. On clear days, the view across the water extends all the way to the Livingstone Mountains in Tanzania.
