The dry season from May to October is the best time to visit Vwaza Marsh, as animals gather around the few remaining water sources. Especially between June and August, hippos and waterbirds concentrate in high densities at the remaining marshes.

Best time of day
In the early morning hours between 6 and 9 AM, hippos are most active and leave the marshes to feed on adjacent grasslands. Evening dusk from 5 PM also features excellent viewing opportunities when animals return to the water sources.

Keep a safety distance of at least 30 meters from hippos, as they are highly territorial and can be dangerous. Feeding hippos or other wildlife is strictly forbidden, and boat trips should only be taken with licensed guides.

What to bring
A good pair of binoculars is essential for observing hippos and waterbirds from a safe distance. Sturdy, waterproof shoes are recommended for walks along the marsh areas, as well as a camera with a zoom lens.

Getting there
Vwaza Marsh Wildlife Reserve is located about 60 kilometers west of Mzuzu and is accessible via the M9 road. From Lilongwe, the drive takes about three hours via the M1 and M9.
