Blantyre stands as Malawi's second-largest city and its primary commercial, industrial, and financial hub. Established in 1876 by missionaries from the Church of Scotland, the city was named after the birthplace of the legendary explorer David Livingstone. It is perched in the Shire Highlands at an altitude of roughly 1,000 meters, which affords it a more temperate climate compared to the low-lying lake regions. One of the city's most striking landmarks is the St. Michael and All Angels Church, a magnificent brick structure completed in 1891 using local materials and craftsmanship under missionary guidance. As the economic engine of the nation, Blantyre is home to the Malawi Stock Exchange and the High Court. The city's skyline is defined by the surrounding peaks of Mount Soche, Michiru, and Ndirande, which serve as natural sanctuaries offering dramatic views and popular hiking trails for both locals and tourists.
