Wenzel Circular Walk (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Vauban Circular Walk is a fascinating cultural and historical route that winds along the most impressive remains of the former Fortress of Luxembourg. Named after the famous French military engineer Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, who significantly modernised the defensive systems in the late 17th century, the trail follows in the footsteps of the Spanish, French, Austrian and Prussian garrisons. The route links strategically important points such as the Holy Ghost Citadel, the Petrusse and Bock Casemates, and the 'Spanish Turrets' on the Rham Plateau. Hikers experience a unique blend of military architecture and wide-open views of the deep valleys of the Alzette and Pétrusse rivers. Information boards along the trail explain the history and function of each fortress element. The circular walk makes the complex history of the fortress, which was considered the 'Gibraltar of the North' for centuries and was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1994, an impressive experience.
