St. Michael's Church (Luxembourg)

Weather…

St. Michael's Church, located at the historic Fish Market, is the oldest surviving sacred building in Luxembourg City and a fascinating mosaic of architectural eras. Its history begins in 987, when Count Siegfried had a small castle chapel built on this site. Over more than a thousand years, the church has been destroyed, rebuilt, extended, and altered countless times, resulting in a unique blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque elements. Its current appearance is defined by the reconstruction in the 17th century, but inside, traces of its long history are visible, such as Romanesque window arches and Gothic vaults. The portal from 1688 is a masterpiece of local Baroque art. Despite its relatively modest size compared to the cathedral, the church exudes a special atmosphere of tranquility and permanence, serving as a silent witness to the entire development of the city from its very beginnings to the present day.
