Neumünster Abbey (Luxembourg)

Weather…

Neumünster Abbey, located in the historic Grund district of Luxembourg City, is a site with a multifaceted history that has undergone dramatic transformations over the centuries. Established in the 17th century by Benedictine monks following the destruction of their original abbey on the Altmünster plateau, it served as a religious sanctuary for nearly two hundred years. After the French Revolution led to its secularization, the complex was repurposed and functioned as a state prison from 1867 for over a century. During World War II, the Nazi occupiers used the facility to incarcerate political prisoners and members of the local resistance movement. In 2004, following an extensive renovation project, the abbey was reborn as the Neimënster Cultural Center, a hub for concerts, art exhibitions, and theatrical performances. Its scenic riverside location and impressive Baroque architecture make it one of the city's most significant cultural and artistic venues.
