Luxembourg City Hall (Luxembourg)

Weather…

Luxembourg City Hall, a representative neoclassical building, dominates Place Guillaume II in the heart of the city. Completed in 1838, it was built according to the plans of city architect Justin Remont on the historic ruins of a 13th-century Franciscan monastery. The clean, symmetrical facade and modest triangular pediment reflect the bourgeois sobriety and self-confidence of the era. A special feature is the two bronze lions flanking the entrance, which serve as popular photo motifs. They were added in 1937 and are the work of Luxembourg sculptor Auguste Trémont. As the seat of the mayor and the city council, the city hall remains the political center of the capital to this day. It symbolically represents the urban autonomy and democratic administration that have developed over the centuries.
