Lënsterbierg Nature Reserve
The Lënsterbierg nature reserve is located near Junglinster in central Luxembourg and impresses with its striking rock formations made of Luxembourg sandstone. These rocks form ecological niches for specialized moss and fern species that thrive in the moist, cool environment of the crevices. The adjacent mixed forest consists predominantly of beech and pine, leading to high structural diversity. Historically, sandstone in the region was often mined as a building material, which is still recognizable in some places on the steep walls. Today, the protection of geological structures and the associated flora is the focus. The area serves as an important habitat for the wildcat and various species of birds of prey such as the red kite. The sandy soils of the plateau also favor drought-resistant plant communities on the more open areas. Hiking trails open up the rocky landscape and offer insights into the erosive processes that have shaped the Gutland over millions of years. The Lënsterbierg is an example of the preservation of rock biotopes in a cultural landscape.
