Kelsbaach Nature Reserve (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Kelsbaach nature reserve is located near Grevenmacher in eastern Luxembourg and is known for its exceptional diversity of dry grassland habitats. It extends over rugged terrain on Muschelkalk soils that were shaped by former quarries and viticultural areas. These anthropogenic interventions created habitats for specialized plant and animal species that thrive on barren, sunny sites. Particularly noteworthy is the occurrence of over 15 orchid species, making the area a hotspot for botanists. The Kelsbaach itself has cut deep into the limestone rock, forming a small, cool valley that contrasts sharply with the dry slopes. The area has been under nature protection since the 1990s and is part of the European Natura 2000 network. Through scrub removal measures and controlled grazing, the valuable open landscape is protected from reforestation. Hikers can discover the geological formations and rich flora on marked paths while enjoying wide views over the Moselle region.
