Mertert Petroleum Port
The Port of Mertert is Luxembourg's only river port and a strategically vital hub for the country's energy supply and foreign trade. Located on the Moselle River near the German border, it was officially inaugurated in 1966 following the canalization of the river, which enabled access for large inland vessels. A central component of the port is the petroleum terminal, through which a significant portion of the national imports of gasoline, diesel, and heating oil are handled. In addition to liquid fuels, bulk goods such as steel products, construction materials, and agricultural produce are transshipped here. The port is designed multimodally, providing efficient interfaces between inland shipping, rail, and road transport. The port facility covers an area of approximately 65 hectares and features extensive storage capacities. As a gateway to the world, Mertert plays a crucial role in Luxembourg's logistical independence and its integration into the European waterway network.
