Best season
Spring (April-May) is the best time for the passage of many waders and ducks through the reed bed. Autumn (September-October) brings massive flocks of starlings and other migratory birds.
Best time of day
Early morning is the most active time when birds fly out of the reeds to feed. The evening dusk is spectacular as thousands of starlings fly into the reeds to roost.
Etiquette
Stay on observation platforms and paths to avoid disturbing the reed bed area. Noise and sudden movements scare the birds; behave calmly and use available camouflage devices.
What to bring
A spotting scope with tripod is handy for identifying distant waterfowl in the reeds. Binoculars with 8× to 10× magnification are sufficient for most observations from the platforms.
Getting there
The area is located near Uebersyren, accessible via the N10 road and the A1 motorway (exit Munsbach). From the parking at the edge of the village, a short footpath leads to the observation huts at the reed belt.
What to expect
Birds may hide in the dense reeds; wait quietly until they show themselves, especially in calm weather. The largest flocks often appear just before sunset, so plan your time accordingly.
