Esch-sur-Sûre Castle (Luxembourg)

Weather…

Esch-sur-Sûre Castle is the oldest archaeological site in the Grand Duchy, perched on a steep rocky ridge encircled by a loop of the River Sûre. The first mention of the site dates back to 927, when the construction of a fortified tower laid the foundation for the Lordship of Esch. In the 15th century, the complex was strengthened with an outer defensive wall totaling 450 meters in length to better protect the settlement from sieges. Following its capture by Louis XIV's troops in 1684, the castle lost its military significance and gradually fell into decay until it was partially dismantled in the 19th century. Today, the ruins provide a spectacular sight, especially when illuminated at night, towering over the medieval village. The surviving remains of the keep and the chapel bear witness to the strategic importance of this fortress in the Luxembourgish Ardennes.
