Lake Upper Sûre (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Upper Sûre Lake (Lac de la Haute-Sûre) is the largest body of water in Luxembourg and the central element of the namesake nature park in the Oesling region. It was created in the 1950s by the construction of a 47-meter-high dam, primarily to supply the country with drinking water and for hydroelectric power generation. The lake's branched shape resembles a fjord and is surrounded by steep, forested slate slopes. Ecologically, the lake is of enormous importance, supplying about 70% of Luxembourgish households with drinking water and providing critical habitats for waterfowl and fish species such as pike and zander. Tourist-wise, the area is a magnet for hikers, sailors, and divers, with strict environmental regulations in place to guarantee water quality protection. Surrounding villages like Esch-sur-Sûre preserve their medieval flair and are deeply connected to the history of the valley.
