Zarasai Church (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Church of Mary of the Assumption in Zarasai is a dominant Neoclassical structure perched on the highest point of the town. The current stone building was constructed between 1840 and 1862 after the original wooden church was destroyed by fire. The architecture is characterized by clean lines, white facades, and a monumental staircase leading to the main entrance. Inside, the church impresses with its vastness and the main altar, which is decorated with a copy of the famous miraculous image of the Mother of God of Trakai. During the late 19th century, the church was a center for the distribution of prohibited Lithuanian literature, highlighting its political significance. Throughout the wars of the 20th century, the church was damaged but always restored through the efforts of the community. Its forecourt features a spectacular view of Lake Zarasaitis, harmoniously embedding the sacred site into the lake landscape. Today, the church is not only a spiritual center but also a venue for organ concerts and cultural gatherings in northeastern Lithuania.
