Gražutė Regional Park (Lithuania)

Weather…

Gražutė Regional Park, spanning nearly 320 square kilometers in northeastern Lithuania, was established in 1992 to protect its exceptionally water-rich and heavily forested landscape. Strongly shaped by the last Ice Age, the region has over 70 lakes, the largest natural one being Lake Luodis, known for its remarkably clear water. However, the true centerpiece of the park is the Antalieptė Reservoir, Lithuania's third-largest artificial water body. With its labyrinth of countless islands, narrow peninsulas, and deep bays, it strongly resembles a Scandinavian fjord. These pristine, often inaccessible waters, surrounded by dense coniferous forests, provide a first-rate habitat for the Eurasian beaver, which actively shapes the landscape with its extensive dam-building. The park also serves as a crucial refuge for rare avian predators such as the osprey and the white-tailed eagle, alongside various heron species. Traversing the extensive network of hiking trails, visitors can discover an exceptionally rich flora, including numerous medicinal herbs and protected forest orchids.
