Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant near Visaginas was once the most powerful nuclear facility in the world and the only one in the Baltic region. It featured two Soviet-designed RBMK-1500 reactors, the same type as those at Chernobyl, which led to significant safety concerns following Lithuania's EU aspirations. As a condition for EU membership, Lithuania committed to decommissioning the plant; the first reactor was shut down in 2004 and the second in 2009. The decommissioning process is a massive technological and financial undertaking expected to last until 2038. For decades, the plant was Lithuania's primary energy source, making the country a net exporter of electricity. The town of Visaginas, purpose-built for the plant's staff, currently serves as the center for the ongoing dismantling and radioactive waste management operations.
