Skuodas is situated in northwestern Lithuania, just a few kilometers from the Latvian border, serving as the administrative center of the Skuodas district. The town was first recorded in 1253 in the archives of the Livonian Order, highlighting its long-standing strategic importance. A pivotal historical event occurred in 1259 with the Battle of Skuodas, where Samogitian forces secured a major victory against the invading knights. In 1572, Skuodas was granted Magdeburg rights by Jan Chodkiewicz, which significantly boosted its economic and social development. Geographically, the town is positioned along the banks of the Bartuva River, which defines the local topography and natural ecosystem. Today, Skuodas is a vital hub for preserving the Samogitian dialect and cultural traditions, which remain central to the community's identity. The modern economy is driven by agriculture, food processing, and cross-border trade with Latvia. The town's cultural landscape is enriched by local museums and historical sites that reflect its resilient frontier history.
