Apuolė Hillfort (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Apuolė Hillfort is a site of immense archaeological and historical significance, standing as the earliest settlement on modern Lithuanian territory to be mentioned in written sources. During the 9th century, Apuolė was the vital political and economic hub of the Baltic Curonian tribe. Archbishop Rimbert’s chronicle, the "Vita Ansgari," provides a detailed account of how Swedish Vikings, led by King Olof, besieged this heavily fortified settlement in 854 AD. After eight days of bloody fighting, the siege ended with a peace treaty and the Curonians paying a massive ransom in silver. Today, the peaceful, grass-covered mound conceals its violent past, which is vividly brought back to life every summer through popular Viking festivals and historical reenactment events.
