The Ignalina area in eastern Lithuania is widely recognized as the country's premier lake district. Much of the region is protected within the Aukštaitija National Park, Lithuania's oldest national park, which features a complex network of over 200 lakes and dense pine forests. The town of Ignalina grew significantly during the mid-19th century following the construction of the Saint Petersburg, Warsaw Railway, which established it as a vital transit point. Today, the area serves as Lithuania's primary hub for winter and water sports, featuring the Lithuanian Winter Sports Center. The local economy is heavily dependent on eco-tourism and recreation, leveraging the scenic glacial landscape. Despite its proximity to the decommissioned nuclear plant in Visaginas, Ignalina remains an ecologically pristine region celebrated for its clean air and traditional wooden architecture found in its many lakeside villages.
