Čepkeliai Marsh (Lithuania)

Weather…

Hidden deep within the Dzūkija National Park, Čepkeliai Marsh is the largest and most strictly protected raised bog system in Lithuania. Covering nearly 60 square kilometers, this pristine wilderness is a relic of the last Ice Age and harbors a highly sensitive, virtually untouched ecosystem. Access to this nature reserve is strictly limited to ensure the protection of its disturbance-sensitive flora and fauna, which includes rare black grouse, cranes, and wolves. The heart of the bog features an extensive network of small marsh lakes surrounded by deep red peat mosses, interspersed with wooded mineral soil islands that appear as green dots in the brown landscape. A specially constructed wooden educational trail on the edge of the area allows a limited number of visitors to take a safe glimpse into this mystical, often fog-shrouded environment without leaving a footprint on the fragile nature.
