Matsieng, celebrated as the "Royal Village," is situated within the Maseru District and serves as the traditional seat of the Lesotho monarchy. The settlement was established in 1858 by Prince Letsie, the son of King Moshoeshoe I, after he relocated from the original mountain stronghold of Thaba Bosiu. Since its founding, Matsieng has functioned as the principal residence for the Paramount Chiefs and later the Kings of Lesotho, housing the Royal Palace and significant ceremonial grounds. The village's architecture features a unique blend of traditional rondavels and colonial-era sandstone structures that embody the heritage of the Basotho nation. Geographically, it is positioned atop a series of hills offering strategic views of the surrounding valleys, a location steeped in oral history. Matsieng remains more than just an administrative center for royal affairs; it is a vital cultural touchstone where traditional rites and national assemblies (Pitso) are still observed.
