Morija, frequently referred to as the "Well of Learning," is situated approximately 45 kilometers south of Maseru at the base of the Makhoarane Plateau. The settlement was founded in 1833 by the first Protestant missionaries from the Paris Evangelical Missionary Society (PEMS), Thomas Arbousset, Eugène Casalis, and Constant Gosselin, at the personal invitation of King Moshoeshoe I. Morija played a transformative role in Basotho literacy, establishing the nation's oldest printing press, Morija Printing Works, and the prestigious Morija Museum & Archives. The town's architecture serves as a living record of its colonial and missionary heritage, featuring remarkably preserved 19th-century buildings and one of the oldest churches in Southern Africa. Geographically, it is located within a lush, hilly landscape that now hosts the annual Morija Arts & Cultural Festival. Beyond its cultural status, Morija serves as a vital hub for healthcare and education, supported by the historic Scott Hospital and several prominent schools.
