Established in 1945 by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, it was the first Catholic university center in Southern Africa, specifically created to provide higher education opportunities to the local population. In 1964, the college evolved into the University of Basutoland, Bechuanaland Protectorate, and Swaziland, which eventually became the National University of Lesotho (NUL).
