Sursock Museum (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Sursock Museum, officially known as the Nicolas Ibrahim Sursock Museum, is a premier modern and contemporary art institution in Beirut. The building was originally the private villa of Lebanese aristocrat Nicolas Sursock, completed in 1912 in a style that harmonizes Venetian and Ottoman architectural influences. Upon his death in 1952, Sursock bequeathed the villa to the city of Beirut with the mandate that it be converted into a museum, which eventually opened in 1961. The architecture is noted for its intricate facades, colorful stained-glass windows, and grand external staircases. The museum houses an extensive collection of Lebanese art dating from the late 19th century to the present, alongside rotating international exhibitions. Despite suffering extensive damage during the August 2020 Beirut port explosion, the building underwent a meticulous multi-year restoration and reopened to the public. It remains a vital cultural hub and a symbol of the city's enduring artistic spirit.
