Saint George Maronite Cathedral (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Saint George Maronite Cathedral in Beirut is the seat of the Maronite Archdiocese and a major religious landmark in the city's central district. Built between 1884 and 1894, the cathedral was designed in a neoclassical style by architect Giuseppe Maggiore, who took inspiration from the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. The structure features a grand facade and an interior characterized by Corinthian columns and ornate religious artwork. During the Lebanese Civil War (1975-1990), the cathedral was severely damaged by shelling and looting, leaving only its skeletal remains. After an extensive restoration process, it was ceremoniously reopened in 2000. A notable feature is its bell tower, which was intentionally raised following the construction of the neighboring Mohammad Al-Amin Mosque to maintain a visual balance and symbolize religious coexistence. Today, the cathedral stands as a testament to the resilience of the Maronite community and the historical depth of Beirut.
