Palm Islands Nature Reserve (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Palm Islands Nature Reserve consists of three small limestone islands, Sanani, Ramkine, and Palm Island, located off the coast of Tripoli. Because of the absence of human settlement, the islands harbor a fragile marine ecosystem and provide a sanctuary for highly endangered animal species. They represent a vital nesting ground for the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) as well as the loggerhead turtle. Furthermore, the islands are a critical resting spot for migratory birds crossing the Mediterranean. The local flora is characterized by halophilic (salt-tolerant) plants and endemic Mediterranean species. Lebanon declared the archipelago a protected reserve in 1992; access is restricted to specific months of the year to prevent disturbances during turtle and bird breeding seasons.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
The warmer summer months are generally considered the most crucial and rewarding time for a visit, as this is typically when endangered sea turtles arrive at the coastal reserve to nest along the sandy beaches.
🌅
Best time of day
Early mornings generally offer the calmest sea conditions for the short boat trip from Tripoli and provide excellent lighting for birdwatching long before the intense Mediterranean midday sun hits the exposed islands.
📜
Etiquette
Strict coastal conservation rules apply; visitors must absolutely avoid walking on or near any marked turtle nesting sites, refrain from leaving any litter behind, and diligently follow all guidelines provided by reserve authorities.
🎒
What to bring
Robust sun protection, including wide-brimmed hats and reef-safe sunscreen, is essential due to the complete lack of shade, while a good pair of binoculars is highly recommended for spotting migrating bird species.
🧭
Getting there
Access to this small, protected group of islands is typically arranged via local boat operators departing directly from the bustling port city of Tripoli, often requiring careful advance coordination during the open summer season.
🦌
What to expect
Spotting nesting sea turtles naturally requires incredible luck and total adherence to non-disturbance protocols, but even without any direct turtle sightings, the abundant coastal birdlife makes the tranquil wait well worthwhile.
