Mseilha Fort (Lebanon)

Weather…

The Mseilha Fort (Qal'at al-Mseilha) is located near the city of Batroun, on the banks of the Nahr el-Jawz River, rising on a distinctly shaped, elongated limestone rock. The structure was built in the 17th century by the Druze Emir Fakhreddine to secure and control the coastal route connecting Tripoli with Beirut. The fortress entirely fills the top of the narrow rock, accessible only by a steep flight of stairs. Its military purpose is evident from the numerous loopholes cut into the thick walls, through which defenders could fire upon the surrounding valley without endangering themselves. Inside the building, cisterns and tiny, vaulted rooms were created for the guards. The Mseilha Fort lacks a residential palace; it was a strictly functional defense work. Due to its distinctive silhouette, the fort is one of the most photographed monuments in Lebanon and was also featured on the 25 Lebanese lira banknote.
