Jelgava Church Tower (Latvia)

Weather…

The Jelgava Holy Trinity Church Tower is the only surviving part of the first stone Lutheran church built in Europe, commissioned in 1574 by Duke Gotthard Kettler. The church itself was destroyed during World War II in 1944, but the prominent tower remained as a ruin and was later meticulously restored. Today, it houses a modern tourist information and cultural center, featuring exhibitions across nine floors detailing the city's history, the Dukes of Courland, and Latvian national symbols. A glass elevator takes visitors to the observation deck on the ninth floor, offering a 360-degree panoramic view of Jelgava and the surrounding plains. The blend of historic masonry and contemporary glass architecture makes the tower a highlight of the Zemgale region. It stands as a symbol of the resilience and reconstruction efforts of the city of Jelgava following its wartime devastation.
