Auce is a characterful small town in southern Latvia, situated in the historic Semigallia region near the Lithuanian border. While first mentioned in records in 1426, the town reached its architectural peak in the mid-19th century. Its most prominent landmark is Vecauce Castle, completed in 1845 in the English Neo-Gothic style according to the designs of Berlin architect Friedrich August Stüler. The castle is recognized as one of the earliest and most significant examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in Latvia and currently houses a research and training facility for the Latvian University of Life Sciences and Technologies. Auce was granted town rights in 1924 and has since evolved into a regional hub for education and agriculture. The town is also well-known for its musical heritage, hosting an annual international brass band festival named after conductor Gunārs Ordelovskis. The flat, fertile surroundings of Auce are heavily cultivated, providing a stable economic foundation for the community. Visitors are drawn to the well-maintained castle park and the serene atmosphere that makes Auce a great destination for heritage-focused travel.
