While first mentioned in records in 1426, the town reached its architectural peak in the mid-19th century. Its most prominent landmark is Vecauce Castle, completed in 1845 in the English Neo-Gothic style according to the designs of Berlin architect Friedrich August Stüler. The castle is recognized as one of the earliest and most significant examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in Latvia and currently houses a research and training facility for the Latvian University of Life Sciences and Technologies. Auce was granted town rights in 1924 and has since evolved into a regional hub for education and agriculture. The town is also well-known for its musical heritage, hosting an annual international brass band festival named after conductor Gunārs Ordelovskis.
