Alsunga is the historical heart of the Suiti community, a unique Catholic enclave within the predominantly Lutheran region of Courland. The settlement was first documented in 1231 as Aliswange in a treaty between the papal legate Baldwin of Alna and the Curonians. Its most prominent landmark is the Alsunga Castle, originally constructed by the Livonian Order in the 14th century and later renovated into a Baroque residence during the 17th and 18th centuries. The formation of the Suiti identity dates back to 1623, when the local landlord Johan Ulrich von Schwerin converted to Catholicism and enforced the faith upon his peasantry. This cultural space, renowned for its bustling folk costumes and traditional polyphonic singing, was inscribed on the UNESCO List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2009. Today, Alsunga serves as a vital center for preserving these centuries-old Latvian traditions.
