Pelči Ridge (Latvia)

Weather…

The Pelči Ridge, known in Latvian as Pelču pauguraine, is a prominent hill formation located just south of the town of Kuldīga in western Latvia. Part of the Western Courland Highland, this ridge is notable for its relatively steep slopes and the dense forests that cover its terrain. The formation originated at the end of the last ice age through the deposition of terminal moraines, with the ridge reaching elevations of approximately 60 to 80 meters above sea level. Geologically, the area consists of a mixture of sand, gravel, and clay, resulting in a varied topography with deep ravines and numerous natural springs. The Venta River flows nearby and has significantly shaped the local relief through its erosive power over millennia. The flora is characterized by ancient mixed forests containing massive oaks and beeches, some of which are several centuries old. Historically, Pelči is best known for the magnificent Pelči Palace, built in the early 20th century and harmoniously set within the hilly landscape. Today, the Pelči Ridge serves as an important recreational area for Kuldīga residents, offering various hiking trails with views over the Venta valley.
