Talas is the capital of the eponymous Kyrgyz region, cut off from the rest of the country by high mountain passes, and lies at roughly 1280 metres above sea level on the Talas River in the broad Talas Valley. The town has about 40,000 inhabitants and took shape in the 19th century around a Russian fortified settlement. The region is often called the heart of Kyrgyz identity, since according to the oral tradition of the Manas Epic, the legendary national hero Manas was born here and was buried in the Gumbez Mausoleum just outside town. Economically Talas is best known for its vast bean fields, whose harvest ranks among Kyrgyzstan's most important export commodities. Even in antiquity, the valley was the setting of the famous Battle of Talas in 751, when Abbasid and Karluk forces defeated the Chinese Tang army and halted China's westward expansion.
