Kambar-Ata-2 Hydroelectric Power Station

The Kambar-Ata-2 Hydroelectric Power Station is a significant energy infrastructure project located on the upper reaches of the Naryn River. Its origins date back to the 1980s, but the collapse of the Soviet Union led to a long halt in construction. Work resumed in earnest in 2007, leading to the commissioning of the first turbine unit in 2010. Currently, the station provides an installed capacity of approximately 120 megawatts, with plans to reach a total of 360 megawatts upon the completion of all three generating units. The project is notable for the use of massive directional blasting to create the initial rock-fill dam in the narrow mountain canyon. Kambar-Ata-2 is a key component of Kyrgyzstan's strategy to achieve energy self-sufficiency and reduce its reliance on fossil fuels. It serves as a precursor to the even larger Kambar-Ata-1 project, which is intended to become one of the largest power plants in Central Asia.
