Arabuko-Sokoke Forest (Kenya)

Weather…

The Arabuko-Sokoke Forest on the Kenyan coast is the largest remaining fragment of coastal tropical forest in East Africa. Spanning approximately 420 square kilometers, it is recognized as a global biodiversity hotspot and provides a habitat for numerous endemic plant and animal species found nowhere else on Earth. The protected area is composed of three distinct forest types: mixed tropical forest, Brachystegia woodland, and Cynometra forest, each of which supports a unique community of wildlife. The forest is particularly critical for the survival of rare bird species, such as the Sokoke Scops Owl and Clarke's Weaver. Conservation efforts began as early as 1943 when the area was gazetted as a Crown Forest. Beyond its ecological value, Arabuko-Sokoke is vital for the local communities, who participate in community-based conservation and sustainable resource management programs.
