Mariakani is a strategically located town in the coastal hinterland of Kenya, straddling the boundaries of Kilifi and Kwale Counties. It is situated approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Mombasa along the main transport corridor connecting the coast to the upcountry regions. Mariakani is most famous for the Mariakani Milk Scheme, one of the country's oldest and most significant dairy cooperatives, which forms the economic bedrock of the local community. The town serves as a vital transport hub for both road and rail, featuring a station on the historic Uganda Railway and being a key point along the modern Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) route. The surrounding landscape is dominated by semi-arid savanna, where livestock ranching is the primary form of agriculture. Culturally, the town is a meeting point for various coastal peoples, particularly the Mijikenda groups, leading to a spirited mix of traditions. Recently, Mariakani has seen industrial growth, with logistics companies and factories setting up to leverage its proximity to the Port of Mombasa.
