Belmonte Castle (Spain)

Weather…

The Castle of Belmonte in the province of Cuenca is one of Spain's best-preserved and architecturally most unique castles. Construction began in 1456 commissioned by Juan Pacheco, Marquess of Villena, on San Cristóbal Hill. The castle is striking for its unusual star-shaped floor plan with six points, which distinguishes it from traditional Castilian fortresses. The architecture combines Gothic and Mudéjar elements, reflected particularly in the magnificent coffered ceilings and plasterwork of the interior rooms. In the 19th century, the castle underwent extensive restoration by Empress Eugénie of France, a descendant of the Pacheco family, who adapted it in the Neo-Gothic style. Today, the castle serves as a museum and is a popular filming location for historical movies, as it conveys an authentic picture of knightly life in the late Middle Ages.
