Consuegra
Consuegra presents one of Spain's most legendary silhouettes. Along the ridge of Calderico Hill stand twelve pristine white windmills, many of which still house their original 16th-century machinery. The windmill named 'Bolero' serves as the visitor center, while 'Sancho' is still used for ceremonial grinding. Adjacent to these 'giants' is the Castillo de la Muela, a formidable fortress rebuilt by the Knights of San Juan in the 12th century. The town is the heart of Spanish saffron production. Every October, the 'Saffron Rose' festival celebrates the harvest of the purple crocus flowers. Local culinary specialties include hearty shepherd dishes like 'Migas' and 'Gachas'. Located 60 km south of Toledo along the A-4 highway, it is a key stop on the Don Quixote Route. A visit during late afternoon provides the best light to capture the windmills against the vast Castilian horizon.
