Kerak Castle
Kerak Castle is one of the largest and most formidable Crusader fortresses in the Levant, looming over the city of Al-Karak on a steep triangular plateau. Construction began in 1142 under Pagan the Butler, Lord of Transjordan, and the fortress served as the backbone of the Kingdom of Jerusalem's eastern defenses. The castle's architecture is a remarkable blend of European Crusader style, Byzantine foundations, and later sophisticated Arab military engineering. It gained notoriety under Raynald de Châtillon, whose aggressive raids on Muslim caravans eventually provoked Saladin to lay siege to the stronghold. After a lengthy resistance, the castle fell to Saladin's forces in 1188, subsequently becoming a provincial capital for the Mamluks, who added grand residential palaces. Today, explorers can navigate a dark labyrinth of stone vaults, immense dining halls, and underground stables. The onsite Kerak Archaeological Museum chronicles the region's diverse history from the Moabite period through the Islamic era.
