Karak is renowned for its massive Crusader fortress, which perches majestically on a plateau 1,000 meters above sea level. Construction of the castle began in 1142 under Payen le Bouteiller, and it quickly became one of the most strategic strongholds in the Kingdom of Jerusalem, controlling trade routes between Egypt and Damascus. Under the rule of Raynald of Châtillon, Karak became a focal point of conflict with Saladin's forces, eventually falling to the Sultan in 1188 after a lengthy siege. The fortress's architecture features a fascinating blend of European Crusader design and later Mamluk expansions, including deep vaults and labyrinthine underground passages. Beyond its military history, Karak is a significant cultural center in southern Jordan, located near biblical sites and offering sweeping views of the Dead Sea and the surrounding Moab mountains.
