Busaira is one of the most historically significant sites in the Tafilah Governorate of southern Jordan. In antiquity, the site was known as Bozrah and served as the capital of the Edomite Kingdom during the Iron Age (c. 8th to 6th centuries BC). The city is perched on a prominent mountain spur, providing the Edomites with an excellent defensive position overlooking the Wadi Araba. Archaeological excavations have uncovered impressive remains of royal palaces, temples, and massive fortifications that demonstrate the wealth and power of the Edomites. Busaira is mentioned several times in the Bible, particularly in the prophetic books, highlighting its ancient regional importance. The modern town continues to preserve this heritage and is a primary destination for archaeologists and history enthusiasts. The rugged and dramatic landscape surrounding the town reflects the harsh yet striking beauty of biblical Edom.
