Wadi Mujib (River) (Jordan)

Weather…

Wadi Mujib, historically known as the River Arnon, is a spectacular gorge in Jordan that enters the Dead Sea at approximately 410 meters below sea level. The Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve, established in 1987, is the lowest nature reserve in the world. Over millennia, the river has carved deep into the sandstone mountains, creating a canyon often referred to as the 'Grand Canyon of Jordan.' The reserve extends from the mountains of Madaba in the east to the Dead Sea in the west, encompassing several distinct climatic zones. This variation supports a rich diversity of flora and fauna, including the Nubian ibex and various rare birds of prey. In antiquity, the Arnon served as a significant boundary between the kingdoms of Moab and the Amorites. Today, the wadi is a premier destination for canyoning and adventure tourism, though water levels are subject to dramatic seasonal fluctuations.

Best season
The river trails are typically open from April to October; the site is strictly closed during winter months and rainy periods due to the severe danger of flash floods in the narrow canyon.

🎒
What to bring
Sturdy water shoes with excellent grip are mandatory, along with a waterproof dry bag for valuables; wear quick-drying athletic clothes and bring a complete change of dry clothing for later.

Parking
There is a designated parking area directly at the Mujib Visitor Center; arrive early in the morning, especially on weekends, as the lot can fill up quickly due to the trail's popularity.
⚠️
Safety
Life jackets provided by the center are mandatory and must be worn at all times; always follow the instructions of the rangers and never enter the canyon if there is any forecast of rain.
⏱️
