Tafilah is a historic city in southern Jordan with roots dating back to the Edomite period, when it was known as Tophel. The region gained modern historical significance during the Great Arab Revolt, specifically through the Battle of Tafilah in 1918, where Arab forces led by T.E. Lawrence secured a crucial victory. Geographically, Tafilah is characterized by its rugged terrain and its proximity to the Dana Biosphere Reserve, Jordan's largest and most ecologically diverse nature reserve. Situated at an elevation of over 900 meters, the city enjoys a cooler climate than the surrounding desert areas. Economically, Tafilah is a hub for mining, particularly phosphate and cement production, but it also remains an agricultural center famous for olive and fig trees. The nearby hot springs of Afra and Borbeita remain popular destinations, valued for their mineral-rich healing waters since ancient times.
