Qasr al-Mushatta is the largest and most ambitious of the Umayyad desert castles in Jordan, located near Amman's Queen Alia International Airport. Construction began around 743-744 AD during the reign of Caliph Walid II, but the project was abruptly halted following his assassination, leaving the massive palace unfinished. The square-plan fortress is enclosed by high walls featuring 25 semi-circular towers and was designed to include grand reception halls and residential quarters. Mushatta is world-renowned for its exquisite stone-carved facade, which displays intricate geometric patterns, floral motifs, and depictions of animals. A significant portion of this ornate facade was gifted to German Emperor Wilhelm II by the Ottoman Sultan in 1903 and is now a centerpiece of the Pergamon Museum in Berlin. The remaining structures on-site provide an impressive look at the blending of Sassanid, Byzantine, and early Islamic architectural styles.

Visiting
Qasr al-Mushatta is the ruin of the largest Umayyad desert castle in Jordan that can be visited. The grounds are vast, and the famous facade with ornate carvings is the highlight.

The archaeological site is typically open from sunrise to sunset as it is not fenced. There are no fixed hours, but access is always possible during daylight.

Photography is allowed throughout the site, and the richly decorated facades are a dream for photographers. Early morning light or late afternoon emphasizes the stone carving details.
Time needed
A visit typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour to walk around the main facade and ruins. For a more thorough look with photo time, allow one and a half hours.

Getting there
