Burao is the second largest city in Somaliland and serves as the capital of the Togdheer administrative region. The city is situated on a plateau in the center of the region, at an elevation of approximately 1,000 meters above sea level, and is bisected by the seasonal Togdheer River. Historically, Burao holds significant political importance as the location where Somaliland's independence from Somalia was proclaimed in May 1991. Geographically, the city acts as a vital hub for trade routes connecting the ports of the Gulf of Aden to the hinterland of Ethiopia. The local economy is heavily defined by its livestock market, which is one of the largest in the Horn of Africa, supplying animals for export to the Middle East. The climate is semi-arid with hot summers and cool winters, where rainfall can vary significantly. The city is also a cultural center known for its poets and scholars who have contributed to Somali literature.
